Choosing to trust in God reaps so many benefits, which we will also cover! And finally, we will talk about some practical ways to trust God more- the very thing, for which, you are made. Let’s go!

What is trust?

The first thing we have to settle is answering the question, “What do you believe?” Each one of the 10 reasons to trust God are grounded in the Bible. Therefore, we must believe God’s Word is Truth! Let’s also define trust according to a dictionary to get us started: “Trust is the reliance on the integrity, strength, or ability of someone or something. It often implies a sense of confidence or assurance based on past experience or evidence.”  This is why God’s promises and His character are important when identifying reasons to trust God. I am often tempted to trust in what I can experience with my five senses. Proverbs 3:5 emphasizes the importance of trusting God, rather than what you are perceiving in tangible ways. 

Psalm 56:3-4 – When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?

Isaiah 26:3-4 – You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.

Psalm 37:3-5 – Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.

Jeremiah 17:7-8 – Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. Rather than trusting our own way or our own strength, we can trust God. This is a game-changer for believers. As children of God, we can access the spiritual blessings that come with trusting Him. Those blessings include more peace, strength and guidance. It means we have hope now and forever. Trust ultimately leads to more trust and transformed character. As you read, I’m certain you are thinking, “I want more of that!” Me too, friend. Before we get into practical ways to trust God more, let’s envision where we are headed when we trust God more.

1. More Peace

Trusting God yields more of God’s peace because, we have a foundation despite the uncertainty and hard times we may face. When we place our trust in God, we are essentially saying, “God’s got this”. The world around us is chaotic and unstable. Believers have access to God’s peace despite external circumstances. In other words, we can live in a chaotic world and we can still have inner peace.

2. More Strength

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 – But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

When I am trusting in my own resources, I tend to feel the weakest. Deep down I know that I am limited in what I can do, but trusting the One who has unlimited resources enables more inner strength.

Ephesians 3:20-21 – Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

When I trust in God, I have so much more patience as I wait on His good plans. The alternative is trusting in my good plans (which often diminish all that God can do in my circumstances). When I barrel forward and do things my own way rather than trusting God, things typically get a bit messy! The Apostle Paul reminds the Ephesians, God can do far more than we ask or think. We do well to take that truth to heart.

Hebrews 4:16 – Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Difficult Circumstances Build Trust

Romans 5:3-4 – Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.

James 1:2-3 – Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.

While I would love for my trust to simply be poured into me with no effort on my part, it has been endured hardship that has grown my faith and trust in God the most. Whether you are faced with natural disasters or a broken heart, God uses storms of life to strengthen our trust in Him.

When I face hardship, I’m stretched and grown spiritually beyond measure. The unfortunate reality is that without difficult times I believe my trust would be weak. God shows up when my heart is broken, proving His love, faithfulness and power (His character). I get the privilege of seeing His promises prevail despite the difficult things with which I am faced. When God’s character and promises shine in the darkness we trust God more. That power of faith will only prepare you more for the next thing you endure.

The character of God or His very essence is good reason to put your trust in Him. Your Heavenly Father loves you! He delights over you and adores you. Let’s dive into some Scriptures that highlight the goodness of God!

1. God’s Love

God’s love is demonstrated in the good news of Jesus Christ. The following verses speak to the great love of God for His creation shown in His Son paying the penalty for our sin. He does this so we can be in relationship with Him. There is literally no greater love than this.

Romans 5:8 – But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

1 John 4:9-10 – In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Matthew 6:26 – Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

I am the first to admit that I want His protection to mean I don’t face tough times. However, facing times of need will grow our faith and trust. God’s Word specifically says we can count on God’s help. He is the True Friend that walks with us through all things.

Psalm 91:4 – He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.

Isaiah 41:10 – Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

6. God’s Goodness

God’s goodness helps me trust Him. He is good, therefore we can count on Him to consider our best interests. 

Psalm 145:9 – The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.

7. God’s Power

When I hold God’s goodness with the power of God, I know that He is using that power to work all things my for good (Romans 8:38). 

1 Chronicles 29:11 – Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all.

Romans 1:20 – For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

8. Power of the Holy Spirit

We also have the power of the Holy Spirit literally dwelling in the hearts of believers. He is our Helper, enabling us to do all things that God has place before us. We can trust God and His power within us.

John 14:16-17 – And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

The Word of the Lord clearly states more promises of God than can be covered in an article. But, I did want to highlight a couple of Bible verses that speak to God being a promise keeper. I can trust anyone who is a promisekeeper- God is our promisekeeper!

Numbers 23:19 – God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?

Isaiah 40:8 – The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.

10. God’s Plans

God’s plan for believers is ultimately good. Regardless of what we endure on earth, we have a future hope beyond this world.

Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

11. Eternal Life

2 Corinthians 4:17-18 – For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

Practical Ways to Trust God More

Trusting God is a journey that we will be on our entire lives this side of heaven. While God actively works in and through us and our circumstances to help us trust Him more, there are some things we can do.
