What does it mean to “seek” God?

This is a great question- in the Blue Letter Bible the Hebrew word for seek is translated as searching out by any method (specifically in worship or prayer). Other words used to describe seek include: desire, request, demand or to secure. As I reviewed the Biblical translation, the definitions and synonyms implied a desperation or deep need. God is our deepest need. Apart from Him we are nothing, we can do nothing and there is nothing. We are created to be in relationship with our Creator and Heavenly Father. Seeking God refers to actively searching for a deeper connection, understanding and is ultimately part of God’s will for His children. Additionally, seeking God is a journey- a life long pursuit until we are in the kingdom of heaven. It is not a destination we will arrive at this side of heaven.

What does the bible say about seeking god?

Below is a list of Bible verses about seeking God that give great insight into the position of our hearts as we seek God, the ways we seek God and the benefits of seeking God. As I reflected on these Scriptures, a humble heart seeks God. A prideful heart does not desire to pursue God, rather a prideful heart seeks self and the things that are not of God. Anyone who is not in Christ Jesus will not even have the desire to seek God. Jesus is the Way to God and His Holy Spirit enables and empowers us to pursue the face of God.

Some of the Ways We Can Seek God

Prayer is a powerful way to stand in the presence of God. It is how we communicate and be in relationship with our Heavenly Father. Prayer is is how we express adoration for God or gratitude for the ways He is working. We can make requests, share concerns and ask for forgiveness. Reading and studying the Holy Bible another way we can seek God.

As we study the Scriptures, reflect and apply Truth to our lives, we are seeking God. This helps us better understand God’s character and His will for us as individuals and all of humanity. Seeking God can be done through worship and community with other believers. Additionally, seeking wise counsel, receiving teaching and guidance is pursuit of God. Mirroring the life of Christ Jesus through service, loving others and selflessness are ways we seek God. Spiritual disciplines such as meditating on God, His Word and fasting is pursuit of God. I wonder what you add to the list- leave your answer in the comments.

Benefits of Seeking God

Mankind is made by God, to be in relationship with God. When we come to God through Christ, the door is opened to be in relationship with God and to seek Him. It quite literally means we are living out the purpose for which we are made. Consequently, nothing is more fulfilling than that! When we seek God through prayer, the Word of God and other spiritual disciplines we get wisdom and God’s guidance for navigating life in a fallen world and during difficult times.

There is nothing greater than the counsel of the Lord. The Bible verses about seeking God reveal that when we seek God- He is found, He is our strength. He is the source of our peace and joy in this sin torn world. Seeking Him in His Word gives us guidance on how to interact with the world and relationships around us. The will of God is revealed in the Scriptures as well. Sanctification is the process of spiritual growth and transforms us into His image. We are invited to actively participate in that process. Jesus is the anchor for our hope. The benefits of seeking God cannot possibly be encapsulated in an article- the benefits are innummerable. What would you add? Leave your answer in the comments!

What does God say about those who seek him?

First of all, the Bible verses about seeking God reveal He is found by seekers! God desires and longs to be in relationship with His creation. The love of God is demonstrated through the work of Christ on the cross. The Scriptures also reveal that God blesses those who seek Him through reward, satisfaction and lacking no good thing (see references below). Seeking God provides us with strength, joy and hope. Standing in God’s presence in prayer not only demonstrates our faith, but it also strengthens our faith as we practice pursuit and dependence on the only true God. God’s Word is a lamp to our feel and a light to our path- it is wise to seek Him in His Word. Our Father also seeks the seekers- I love that image of the Most High God looking for the seekers!

Beautifully communicated about SEEKING God. Thank you so much. I am in it for the long haul. I have taken the seed, planted it, watered it, and it has roots. I bear fruit. Sadly, not as much as I should have by now. I do know that God is not doing bad things to people and we cannot blame HIM. We must take our responsibility as HE is a good and loving GOD. Thank YOU
