Confidence is defined as, “a feeling of self-assurance arising from one’s appreciation of one’s own abilities or qualities.” Self-esteem is defined as, “confidence in one’s own worth or abilities; self-respect.” Notice how both of those definitions depend on your gifts, talents and abilities. What happens if those things aren’t what the world values? Then does that decrease your worth and value? Can you see how I am standing on shaky ground if my value is attached to my abilities? And what if I lose those talents or abilities? Does that reduce my value? The first step to true confidence is looking at God’s Word. We must find our confidence and self esteem in His abilities and what He has done for us, in us and through us. This means we have to stop leaning on our own understanding of value and worth. The world says you have value if you work hard enough and it’s based on your own abilities. God’s Word says a very different thing. He says we are made in the image of God therefore we have value. 1. Romans 5:8 

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

You are loved in all of your imperfections. God’s love is not dependent on perfection, works, accomplishments, status or anything else that the world values. His love is most clearly demonstrated in His willingness to send His Son to die on the cross so that we can be in relationship with Him. There is no greater love than One who lays down His life for us. 

2. Ephesians 6:10

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Ephesians 6:10

You are strong because God enables your strength in everything that He calls you to do. Scripture says that His power is made perfect in your weakness. Additionally, when we are weak then we are strong because the Spirit of God empowers and strengthens in ways we cannot do apart from Christ.

Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. 2 Corinthians 3:5

When our script is “I can” instead of “I can’t”, it changes the way we approach life, relationships and hardships. You can do all things through Christ who gives you strength.

5. Jeremiah 7:7-8a

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.” Jeremiah 7:7-8a

Trusting in the Lord is the very thing that builds confidence and self-esteem. If I am trusting in my own confidence , my own strength, my own human wisdom or my own resources- I will find myself lacking in every way. Yet true confidence comes from leaning into the power of Christ- His strength, His godly wisdom and His endless resources.
