50 Identity in Christ Bible Verses

Understanding our identity in Christ is paramount. Seeing ourselves through the lens of our new identity in Christ changes everything! In this article, we will outline many Bible verses on our identity in Christ because Scripture is our plumb line for Truth. The Bible gives us a clear definition who we are in Christ. Several common questions will be answered as well.

What does identity in Christ mean?

Why is knowing your identity in Christ important?

How can we live our identity in Christ?

My prayer for you is that you would not only know who Jesus says you are, but that you would have the faith to live out the truth of your God given identity.

What does identity in Christ mean?

The moment we come to Christ as our Savior we are made new.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 2 Corinthians 5:17

Being made new or born again happens in a single moment. In that single moment, we are given a new identity. A few things that change includes, but is not limited to… We go from unrighteous to declared righteous. Enemies of God to friends of God. Carnally minded to spiritually minded.

Our old nature has died and is buried, never to return again. New life in Christ has begun.

We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. Romans 6:4

This doesn’t mean we act perfectly. Even though we have a new identity in Christ, we still live in our fleshly bodies. Yet, God continues to refine us and grow us and grace. He invites us into that process through sanctification.

Why is knowing your identity in Christ important?

Knowing who we are in Christ is foundational. When we are uncertain of our identity in Christ, we will lack clarity on what our purpose is exactly. We will experience self-doubt as we define our own identity based on our life experiences rather than scripture. Each of us has life experiences and people in our lives that have impacted our identity- whether positively or negatively. We have a tendency to draw our identity from who others say we are. This leaves us on shaky ground.

Knowing who we are in Christ brings clarity and certainty into our lives. We will lean into and live out our purpose with confidence! My trust will be in who the Great I Am, says I am, rather than who the world says we are. Or who we say we are…

How can we live our identity in Christ?

The first step is looking to Scripture for the definition of our identity in Christ. When we allow people in our lives to define us or make up our own definition of who we are, we will be veering away from the Truth. The only One able to give us our identity is our Maker.

Once we know our identity in Christ verses, we have to choose to believe. However, sometimes that’s easier said than done. Many of us have false core beliefs about ourselves. In spite of that, we can always ask Jesus to strengthen our faith in this area – He is faithful to help us believe His truth.
