What Does it Mean to Trust God?

The best way to dive into Scriptures on trusting God is to first define what this means. Check out this definitive and powerful Bible verse…

Hebrews 11:1 – Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Trusting God means we have faith or confidence in His character. I’m certain you have people in your life that you trust. Why do you trust them? Likely, they have a proven track record of being reliable. They might be know for specific attributes that lead you to believe they are trustworthy. I have a few specific friends that pop into my mind as trustworthy because they have integrity and speak truth. They act the same way with me and in the presence of others. This trust has developed and grown the longer I’ve known them.

Now take this understanding of trust and apply it to God. His character is unchanging- the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. He is holy, loving, gracious and sovereign. The list goes on and on of all the wonderful attributes of God. We can understand these truths from Scriptures. We also get the privilege of experiencing those attributes in our own life.

Trusting in God connects with a surrending to Him. This means we surrender our own plans and desires to His plans and desires. Trusting God also allows for patience and waiting on Him, His timing and His plans. When we trust God, it helps us remain steadfast in our faith even when we are faced with tough times. Trusting God is a continual journey of growing in reliance on Him and experiencing His faithfulness in our lives.
