What is transformation in the Bible?

Transform is defined as, “make a thorough or dramatic change in the form, appearance, or character of”. In the Bible transformation means “change or renewal from a life that no longer conforms to the ways of the world to one that pleases God”. When we come to Christ as our Savior our spiritually dead heart comes to life. We are saved, justified and transformed. Our old lives are gone and our new lives are here.

2 Corinthians 5:21 – For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Salvation

Our Savior Jesus Christ came into the world to save the world, not condemn the world. He accomplished this through His death on the cross. The blood of Christ is payment for our sin.

John 3:16-17 – For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

At the moment of salvation so much happens. First, we have a complete heart transformation. We go from spiritually dead to spiritually alive. This is a radical heart transformation, literally changing everything! We become a new creation with a new life. The Spirit of God dwells in believers, sealing us for eternity, guiding us and helping us. We become a part of the family of God-adopted as dearly loved children. Even our desires are changed. We become increasingly eternally focused. Our life goes from meaningless to purposeful. And the process of sanctification is kicked off!

Sanctification

Sanctification is part of God’s plan for our lives. The word sanctification is related to the word saint; both words have to do with holiness. To “sanctify” something is to set it apart for special use; to “sanctify” a person is to make him holy. This is a process where we are invited to participate. Being justified is all God’s work. One day we will be glorified when we pass from this world to eternity-also all God’s doing. The messy middle (everything in between) is where we work with God moment by moment being made into the likeness of Jesus. Being made spiritually alive is done by God in a single moment. But, our powerful God- continues to do His transformative work in us and through us. Faithfully transforming and conforming us into the image of Jesus. It’s a gift and a promise.

Philippians 1:6 – And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

Philippians 2:12-13 -Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

Transformation and God’s Character

Transformation in the life of believers speaks volumes about God! When I reflect on His transformative power in our lives- power is vital. God is powerful. He is so powerful that He can take a spiritually dead heart and make it alive. God is also love. Salvation is a demonstration of God’s love, but so is His desire to transform us until the day of Christ.

He cares for us and loves us so much that He wants to continue to change us from the inside out, day by day. Transformation is also a demonstration of His faithfulness. He is faithful to complete a good work in us (Philippians 1:6). Additionally, it points to His presence. In order to change us, He is always with us. God is impartial. This transformative work is for ALL of His children. He doesn’t pick and choose certain people to transform- it’s for all of His children.
