What Does Renewing Your Mind Mean?

The dictionary definition of “renew” is to…become new or as new; give fresh life or strength to something. Renewal of the mind is changing into something different and better than before. Renewing of the mind changes the lens through which we believe, think and live.

The first line in Romans 12:2 (see below), “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” The world comes at us all the time and from every angle. If we are not seeking the Truth of God, we will find ourself aligning with the world more than the Truth. In order to align more with Truth, we will need to renew our minds with it! As we renew our minds in the power of the Holy Spirit, we are increasingly equipped to trust God’s promises, live as a new creation and know the perfect will of God.

Bible Verses on Benefits of Renewing of Your Mind

One thing that God has made clear to me over the years is that He has a purpose behind everything He calls us to do. 1.Transformation

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2

We have world coming at us from every angle. Consequently, we don’t have to put much effort into conforming to the customs of this world. Music, social media, magazines, billboards and television all conform to the pattern of this world. On the other hand, renewing our mind takes intentionality and effort. We must set time aside to align with God’s Truth when we study the Bible. The renewal of your mind is how you get to know your Heavenly Father, His will, His character and His ways.

    2.Equipping

All Scripture is God – breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

God’s Word is the final authority on how to live the Christian life. His Word informs us of His best for us and His Holy Spirit empowers us to live out His best for us. Additionally, His instruction through Scripture helps us stop living the old way and experience perfect peace as we trust in His promises.

    3.Bear Much Fruit

This is to my father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. John 15:8

As we renew our mind, we become increasingly aligned with truth. As a result, we begin to bear more fruit. We are more able to put of the old self and the deceitful desires of the flesh. More and more we reflect the light of Christ Jesus and manifest the fruit of the Spirit.

    4.Spiritual Growth

Like new born babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. 1 Peter 2:2-3

A renewed mind transforms us day by day, moment by moment. We are created to grow, change increasingly into the image of Christ.

    5.Blessings

Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. John 13:17

God’s ways are just better. When we walk in obedience to Him, we reap blessings. In my own life, I have seen great spiritual blessings from being in His Word. Additionally, I have see great blessings in my relationships when I treat others the way His Word instructs me versus the way my flesh may respond.

    6.Preparation for Hard Times

Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 1 Peter 4:12

Suffering and difficulties are part of our time here on earth. There is no escaping that truth. Having a Biblical view of suffering will change your experience of it when you walk through it. We will all go through a hard time, God’s Word will prepare us.

    7.Hope

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

Could you use more hope in your life? I think we all could. Renewing your mind naturally leads to more hope. Hope for us in the present and hope for eternal life that awaits us when we will stand in the presence of Jesus forever.

    8.Conviction

For the Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

Renewal of your mind in God’s Word helps us see our thoughts and attitudes compared with Truth. I often hear the gentle voice of the Holy Spirit calling me to put of my sinful nature and put on the things of God, aligning with God’s perfect will.

    9.More Faith

Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the messages heard through the word about Christ. Romans 10:17

Umm, more faith? Yes please! More faith enables us to rest in His love and His promises. We surrender it all to Him and let go of self dependence. More faith is the only way to embrace the goodness of God.

    10.Take Thoughts Captive

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5

Have you ever wished you could hit a shut off switch on your mind? I know I do! Our own thought life can mislead us into believing things that don’t line up with the Holy Bible. The more we renew our mind, the more we are able to identify the lies that lead to anxious thoughts or negative thoughts and put our mind on what is pure, lovely, delightful, and worthy of praise. Taking thoughts captive helps us overcome bad thoughts or negative thinking. Trade your own thoughts for the mind of Christ.

    11.Eternally Minded

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. Colossians 3:2

The more you spend time renewing your mind, you are increasingly able to shift your perspective to align yourself with the things of God, His ways and His will.

These verses help us understand the incredible blessings in carving out time with God. This is not an exhaustive list- The benefits of time with your Heavenly Father cannot be measured in a blog post. Add any Bible verses to the comments!

8.More Desire and Delight in the Word
